Climate stories highlight the impacts of climate change on communities, ecosystems, and economies hardest hit, often focusing on firsthand experiences and local challenges.
They also showcase solutions and actions being taken to mitigate or adapt to climate change, inspiring others to get involved.
Broadcasting integrity from the heart of the Amazon
In the remote Amazonian regions of Loreto and Ucayali, where dense forests meet the borders of Colombia and Brazil, communities are harnessing the power of radio to protect their land and hold authorities accountable. La Voz del Bosque (“The Voice of the Forest”) is a radio programme created and run by members of the Forest Anti-Corruption Networks (RAF), supported by Proética, Transparency International’s chapter in Peru.
Through over 130 broadcasts so far, these networks are bringing essential information to Indigenous and rural communities that often have no other reliable source of news. The radio shows cover a wide range of issues: Indigenous peoples’ rights, environmental governance, community oversight of timber extraction and mining, and the fight against corruption that fuels deforestation.
Behind every programme are Indigenous communicators and local journalists who have been trained in Proética’s workshops. Each year, during the Anti-Corruption and Environmental Governance School, the networks develop action plans to set their priorities with radio production consistently topping the list. As one of the few accessible media channels in these territories, radio has become a lifeline for information and civic participation.
The RAFs themselves are a diverse coalition: over 50 civil society organisations and five Indigenous federations representing more than 600 communities. They monitor the legality of natural resource management, advocate for stronger local regulations, and empower residents to exercise oversight.
By broadcasting La Voz del Bosque weekly or biweekly in Ucayali and Loreto, these communities are shining a light on abuses that thrive in isolation - raising awareness, mobilising collective action, and defending both their rights and the Amazon forests they call home.
