Transparency International Uganda condemns the murder of Joan Kagezi

Transparency International Uganda is shocked by the murder of Joan Kagezi, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution and Senior Principal State Attorney, and calls for her killers to be brought to justice.

Ms Kagezi was in charge of the International Crime Division handling international crimes such as terrorism, war crimes, and trafficking in persons. At the time of her tragic death she was the lead prosecutor in the case of the 2010 terror suspects now before the High Court. She was also working with the police in the prosecution of the suspects in the recent spate of murders, robberies and terrorism in Busoga region and Kampala.

We recognise her selfless sacrifice and dedicated advocacy in the fight for Ugandan justice. Her death is a great loss to this country.

We note that this attack comes after what appears to be other well-planned assassinations of public figures, including the murders of two senior Muslim clerics and a district official.

“Transparency International Uganda condemns such killings. We view this latest killing as an attempt to intimidate the judiciary from its rightful role of ensuring justice prevails. We stand firm in solidarity with the judiciary and pray that despite this gruesome act against a judicial officer, justice takes its course without fear or favor in all the cases that Joan Kagezi was handling” said Peter Wandera, executive director of Transparency International Uganda

“We further insist that the people behind the assassination are apprehended and duly punished for their crime,” added Wandera.
