Transparency International - Bulgaria objects to election process for the Head of the State Agency for National Security

The election of the Head of the State Agency for National Security by the 42nd National Assembly of Republic of Bulgaria on the 14th of June 2013 is an outrageous example of how Bulgaria has failed to meet transparency and integrity standards in its political systems. The election process that took place undermines the very fundamental principles of democracy and is not in the public interest. The National Assembly failed to create a competitive procedure with high standards of publicity and transparency for all the candidates as well as information on their concepts for the role of Bulgaria’s sole anti-corruption agency.

Transparency International - Bulgaria urges the MPs to once again reflect the fact that the effective functioning of state authorities is based not only on written rules and procedures, but should be also embedded in standards of integrity.
