Media Advisory: New report will look behind South Asia’s rampant corruption

South Asia tops the list of the regions most affected by corruption. It has the worst average Corruption Perceptions Index score of any other part of the world. One South Asian in three paid bribes when dealing with public services in 2012.

On Wednesday 21 May a new report from Transparency International, the global anti-corruption movement, will identify the gaps that allow corruption to happen in six South Asian countries - Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The first study of its kind in South Asia, the report is based on research by Transparency International national chapters into 70 public institutions across the region. It analyses institutions such as the judiciary, the business community, the media, political parties, and the executive branch of government to assess their transparency and vulnerability to corruption.

The report will call for government action to tackle corruption, identifying specific reforms that are needed in each country and across the region.

The report will be launched at a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday 21 May at 13.30 Nepal time, 08.15 AM London time. It will be available at www.transparency.org at this time.
