Auditor General’s Reports

Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) would like to commend the government and in particularly the Office of the Auditor General on the public release of the Auditor General’s reports to 30the June 2008. It is testament to the progress of this country that the Office of the Auditor General has the capacity to implement full audits on all Government Entities and Public Funds and that the status of these audits have been made publicly available.

Opposition Leader Mr Manasseh Sogavare has also publicly applauded the latest Auditor General’s Report, as reported in the Solomon Star on Friday 24th October. However, the Auditor General’s audit reports have uncovered many, serious examples of mismanagement, fraud and corruption within the public sector involving millions of dollars of misused funds. Implementing audits and publicly publishing their findings is only the first step in reducing corruption and the mismanagement of funds in this country. The real work is to now ensure that perpetrators of mismanagement, fraud or corruption, as highlighted by the audits, are dealt with in the appropriate manner. Many of these acts are illegal and we must ensure that the accused are brought to justice. To uncover acts of corruption is one step, but to ensure that the trend of corruption, fraud and the mismanagement of public funds does not continue, those guilty of these acts must be dealt with appropriately.

TSI implores the government and parliament to act quickly and appropriately to deal with the matters highlighted by the audits. TSI encourages the public to also lobby the government on this important issue. To ensure that in the future, public funds of the Solomon Islands, yours and my tax dollars are spent on the much needed services for the public where they are allocated.
