TI PNG saddened by passing of Chairman

The Board Secretary of Transparency International PNG Inc (TI PNG), Mr Lawrence Stephens, is saddened to announce the untimely passing of colleague and TI PNG Chairman Mr Mike John Manning, OL, OBE.

Mr Manning suffered a heart attack in Rabaul this morning (22/08/08). He was 65 years old.

The Board of Directors, staff and members of TI PNG offer their heartfelt condolences to the family. Mr Manning is survived by his wife (Relly Manning), children (David, Allen, Belinda, James, Kate, Samuel) and grandchildren.

Mr Manning was a passionate anti-corruption campaigner. He became a member of the TI PNG board in 1999. He was elected Chairman in 2003 following the death of the inaugural Chairman the late Sir Anthony Siaguru. Mr Manning brought energy and drive to the organisation and worked tirelessly for the cause of TI. He served with distinction and was recognised by his peers when he was re-elected, by other national chapters, to the TI’s global accreditation board at the 2007 World AGM in Bali.

Mr Manning has served on numerous boards, including statutory commercial and civil society boards in the country. Within these roles he has represented PNG around the world in a number of different forums.

The people and country of PNG have lost a leader who served with tremendous distinction and commitment. He will be missed by all who knew and respected him.

Mr Manning’s family in Rabaul are finalising funeral arrangements. These will be announced in due course.
