Report reveals the UK conservative party received US$4.3 million from polluters, fossil fuel interests and climate deniers in 2022

Corruption Type

Conflict of Interest, Undue Influence

Date of case: March 2023

A detailed article by the climate-focused website DeSmog shows that the UK’s conservative party received millions of pounds from high-pollution industries such as construction, aviation, mining, and oil industry, and individuals connected to the Global Warming Policy Foundation think tank. The latter has rejected the legitimacy of climate science in the past.

The report says that this revelation comes after the government announced a long list of policies on energy and the transition to net zero. Rather than strengthening the commitment to the government’s legally binding climate targets, the policies are expected to entrench the role of fossil fuels in the UK’s energy system. It also raised doubts about the government's capacity to fight climate change when members of the party received donations from fossil fuel interests.
