UAE State Oil Company has Access to COP28 Climate Summit Emails

Corruption Type

Conflict of Interest, Undue Influence

Date of case: June 2023

Revelations by the Guardian show that the UAE state oil company was able to access emails from COP28 and was also involved in responding to media inquiries. Despite claims from the COP28 office that its email system is separate from that of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), expert findings show otherwise. Al Jaber’s role as both the president of COP28 and leading the state oil company has come under scrutiny from the outset, flagging risks of the UAE misusing this position to exert undue influence and access important information.
