Transparency International will release a summary of preliminary findings from a study into the governance structure of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), on Tuesday, 3 April 2018.
The report by Transparency International’s Climate Governance Integrity Program analyses the IMO’s governance framework and makes recommendations to help the IMO equip itself against different forms of corruption risks, including undue influence.

The shipping industry could contribute up to 17% of global CO2 emissions by 2050 if left unregulated. The IMO has an integral role in helping the shipping industry meet the targets set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate change and Goal 14 on oceans, as well as the targets of the Paris Agreement.
The IMO Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) from Ships meets in London 3 – 6 April 2018. The agency’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) meets in London 9 – 13 April 2018. The working group and committee are responsible for drafting and adopting the IMO’s initial strategy for reducing GHG emissions, respectively.
