Transparency International confirms Azerbaijan chapter continues work despite funding delays

Transparency International is concerned that funds for a project that is registered with the Ministry of Justice in Azerbaijan are not reaching its chapter and hampering its work, but confirms that the operations of Transparency International Azerbaijan (TI Azerbaijan) will continue as normal.

Technical banking problems blocked funds from a portion of a four-year grant aimed to support the chapter’s work with the government and civil society on promoting transparency and engaging citizens in anti-corruption activities.

Transparency International calls on the Council of State Support for NGOs to investigate the issue and to ensure that the work of TI Azerbaijan can continue without further funding blocks.

“Our organisation works diligently to promote anti-corruption efforts in Azerbaijan. Unfortunately the refusal by one bank to accept the funds that support us could hamper our ability to deliver on our work,” said Rena Safaralieva, Executive Director of TI Azerbaijan. “We have now switched banks and hope this will not happen again.”
