In Bangladesh’s Barguna district, a government-built cyclone shelter was supposed to protect the local fishing community. The responsible engineer built it comfortably next to his own house instead, leaving most locals cut off by a river.

In response, Transparency International Bangladesh is campaigning for more community participation and civic oversight in climate response projects. This has started a slow shift in the right direction, but much remains to be done to properly protect citizens in a country as vulnerable to climate change as Bangladesh.
