Transparency International mourns Richard von Weizsäcker

Global anti-corruption community loses an inspiring figure with the passing of the former German president

Transparency International is deeply saddened by the passing of former German President Richard von Weizsäcker on Saturday. Richard von Weizsäcker was a figure of great moral authority who contributed enormously to the fight against corruption.

Peter Eigen, founder of Transparency International and Chairman of Transparency International's Advisory Council said, "Richard von Weizsäcker recognised early the devastating effects of corruption on the most vulnerable and indeed to the very fabric of our societies. He played a historic role in generating support from German multinationals for the criminalisation of the bribery of foreign public officials. This was a game-changing step in the fight against corruption because it acknowledged the part that rich nations play in the vicious cycle of corruption that steals developing nations' hopes for a better future. It also helped pave the way for the establishment of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention."

Transparency International Germany Chair Edda Müller said, "Richard von Weizsäcker was a statesman of high integrity, personifying the moral values that democratic societies need. His example should be a guide for all politicians today and in the future."

Richard von Weizsäcker's association with Transparency International dates from the anti-corruption group's earliest years when he agreed to become one of the first members of its Advisory Council. This cooperation with such a prominent and respected public figure was all the more important since it came at a time when the anti-corruption cause was the object of much cynicism.

The entire Transparency International movement remains inspired by the values that Richard von Weizsäcker so charismatically embodied throughout his life and offers heartfelt condolences to his family.
