Press Statement on December 17 Investigations

Dismissal of the indictment on December 17th corruption investigations disturbs the public conscience and calls into question of the concept of justice in an open society.

The investigations initiated with serious allegations and conducted since 17th of December have caused a deep disappointment in the fight against corruption in Turkey. The dismissal of the investigations before they were even brought to the court should be noted from the rule of law perspective as it is conspicuous. This situation yields to a common perception as the judicial independence has been intervened and creates concerns that are not unusual in a democratic society.

What we need is to have a transparent judicial process showing there is no impunity for people in power and to take necessary steps in order to relieve the public conscience for the fight against corruption.

Thus, the shadow of suspicion over judicial bodies should be removed and a fair and transparent process needs to be conducted.
