We, the anti-corruption organisations and activists participating in the fifth ministerial conference of the Arab anti-Corruption and Integrity Network (ACINET) held in Tunisia, are deeply concerned by the restriction on freedom of travel and movement for Sharaf Almosawi, one of the network’s members and the Chair of the Bahrain Transparency Society (BTS). Due to this restriction, Mr Almosawi was not able to attend the conference.
These restrictions are not consistent with the need to adopt serious policies to fight corruption. They also hinder the joint efforts of governments and civil society working together on this front.
We call for granting full freedom, including freedom of movement, to civil society organisations to allow them to contribute to national anti-corruption efforts. We also call for lifting the travel ban on our colleague, Sharaf Almosawi, as soon as possible.
