Transparency International condemns intimidation of chapter in Senegal

Transparency International, the global anti-corruption organisation strongly condemns the recent threats and violence directed at members of Forum Civil, the Senegalese chapter of Transparency International.

Since February, the offices of Forum Civil were set on fire, death threats were received by one member of staff and another was the victim of a burglary.

“We support Forum Civil and its good work against corruption in Senegal. Civil society organisations, journalists and lawyers must be able to operate without intimidation or retaliation,” said Huguette Labelle, chair of Transparency International.

Forum Civil promotes good governance in the public sector. It is urging the government to set up the National Anti-Fraud and Corruption Bureau and to establish a commission to oversee the recovery of ill-gotten gains that has the power to conduct investigations and to press charges.
