International Anti-Corruption Day in Kosovo

Kosova Democratic Institute (KDI)/Transparency International Kosova (TIK), for International Anti-Corruption Day, 9 December, organised a symbolic activity. A present was given to the Government of Kosovo including reports from 2012 of Transparency International, the European Commission, Freedom House, BTI and KDI. The reports provide assessments for corruption in our country.

In all of these reports, Kosovo is ranked among the states with a high level of corruption, especially in the public enterprises where employment through nepotism dominates and with the public administration that is highly politicised. These reports consider Kosovo as a country with a high degree of an informal economy and with a lack of capacities to fight it. The function of the judicial system which is critical for the rule of law is also considered as non-independent.

Corruption consequences are serious, starting from the lack of economic development, poverty stimulation and democracy violation. On the other hand, apart from Kosovo there is no country in the region that has made a bigger investment in designing and establishing anti-corruption strategies and bodies, including EULEX. All these remain ineffective and useless in stopping corruption.

Witnessing the Government’s indifference to these reports, today on International Anti-Corruption Day, KDI/TIK calls upon the Government again, to react and take into consideration these reports and start the work to fight against corruption, which from this moment should be one of the top priorities of our country.
