Transparency International Protests Attempt to Silence Criticism in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Open Letter to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Srpska

Transparency International’s Chair, Huguette Labelle, today sent an open letter protesting recent statements by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, which undermine the freedom of expression and question the credibility of the global organisation’s local chapter TI Bosnia and Herzegovina (TI BiH).

In recent statements to the press, Dodik said his Justice Ministry will launch legal proceedings against TI BiH in response to a report on privatisations recently issued by the chapter. Transparency International protests any curbs on TI BiH’s right to draw conclusions based on research and to freely express these.

It is Ti BiH’s fundamental right to publish reports and voice its opinions. Attempts - even unintentional ones - to intimidate or silence such NGOs are against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constitution.
