UK Climate Minister Faces Criticism: Links to Fossil Fuels Raise Concerns

Corruption Type

Undue Influence, Conflict of Interest

The conservative MP, Graham Stuart, appointed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in September 2022, owns majority shares of a publishing business that promotes 4x4 and SUVs, dubbed as “gas guzzlers” and are known as major CO2 emitters. A recent report by the International Energy Agency is critical of the role of SUVs and their contribution to climate change.

According to another report, Mr. Stuart reportedly received a total of £12000 (around 14,800 USD) in two separate accounts from a fuel resale distributor and an aviation company towards funding his re-election campaign. According to the reports, it has emerged that in 2019, JR RIX & Sons, involved in the distribution and sale of fuel, donated £10000 for the political cause. In addition, Stuart received £2000 (around 2500 USD) from Bostonair, a Hull-based aviation company. The revelations come shortly after Stuart argued to the environment group of MPs that he supported new coal mining and a new round of oil and gas licensing which he said was good for the environment.
