Despite European countries’ promises to build back greener after the COVID-19 pandemic, fossil fuel industries applied heavy pressure to ensure they benefit from rescue funding. They managed to win concessions for climate-damaging energy schemes, thanks to cosy relationships with high-level decision-makers. EU and US companies' enormous influence on government policies has led to calls for a firewall between decision-makers and fossil fuel lobbyists.
