Policy Dialogue: Money and politics – Cleaning up democracy in the Balkans

Tuesday, 25 June 2013, 16.00-17.30 (registration from 15.45)

The European Policy Centre, in cooperation with Transparency International, is pleased to invite you to a Policy Dialogue, on 25 June, on Money and politics – Cleaning up democracy in the Balkans.

As elsewhere in multi-party democracies, political parties in the Balkans rely on funding to survive, develop and run their activities. But in the young democratic systems of the region, parties’ fundraising efforts can be especially vulnerable to corrupt and non-transparent practices. Abuses of political party financing undermine public trust in the political system and thus the very foundation of representative democracy. Do the Balkan countries have robust legal frameworks in place to regulate the financial operations of parties, and, if yes, is the law applied in practice? How does the situation in the Balkans compare to that in EU member states, and what role can the EU play in pushing for reforms of party funding in the region?

These issues will be addressed by a distinguished panel, which includes Nemanja Nenadic, Program Director at Transparency Serbia, Tinatin Ninua, Regional Coordinator for South East Europe at Transparency International Secretariat – both of whom will present findings from the recent TI regional report, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on “Buying influence? Money and politics in the Balkans” – Tanja Fajon, Member of the European Parliament, and Fernando Casal Bértoa, Post-doctoral Fellow at Leiden University. Corina Stratulat, EPC Policy Analyst, will chair the event.

We very much hope that you will be able to attend. Please confirm your participation by replying to n.news@epc.eu
