# PEOPLE AND CORRUPTION: MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA SURVEY 2016 URL: https://www.transparency.org/en/publications/people-and-corruption-mena-survey-2016 Type: Publication or report Published: 2016-05-03 Updated: 2020-04-06 --- 03 May 2016 In this latest Middle East and North Africa edition of the Global Corruption Barometer we find that 50 million adults in the region are having to pay bribes to access the basic services that they need. This is one of the findings from our survey, which aims to give a voice to ordinary citizens' views and experiences of corruption and help hold governments to account for their actions – or lack thereof – at stopping public sector graft. For the survey we are in partnership with the Afrobarometer and several national partners of the Arab Barometer network, which spoke to 10,797 adult respondents from September 2014 to November 2015 in nine countries and territories: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Tunisia and Yemen. ### Related publications ## [Regional Assessment of Integrity in Political Finance in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia](https://www.transparency.org/en/publications/integrity-political-finance-asia) Publication • 03 September 2026 This report reviews systems across 17 countries to identify the areas of political finance most in need of reform. ## [Connecting the Dots: How financial intelligence units expose corrupt money flows and how they could do more](https://www.transparency.org/en/publications/connecting-the-dots) Publication • 24 June 2026 Financial intelligence units can play a key role in uncovering corruption, but only if they have the powers, resources and access to information they need. ## [Whistleblowing Authorities in Europe: Roles, challenges and lessons learned](https://www.transparency.org/en/publications/whistleblowing-authorities-in-europe-roles-challenges-and-lessons-learned) Publication • 19 June 2026 This report examines the institutional design, mandates and functioning of national whistleblowing authorities across Europe. ## [Strengthening Public Oversight: Good practices for partnerships between civil society and supreme audit institutions](https://www.transparency.org/en/publications/strengthening-public-oversight-good-practices-for-partnerships-between-civil-society-and-supreme-audit-institutions) Publication • 29 May 2026 Stronger collaboration between Supreme Audit Institutions and Civil Society Organisations is needed for better public financial oversight. ## Countries - [Algeria](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/algeria) - [Egypt](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/egypt) - [Jordan](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/jordan) - [Lebanon](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/lebanon) - [Morocco](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/morocco) - [Palestine](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/palestine) - [Sudan](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/sudan) - [Tunisia](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/tunisia) - [Yemen](https://www.transparency.org/en/countries/yemen) ![](https://images.transparencycdn.org/images/2016_GCB_MENA_EN_116.jpg?auto=compress&fit=crop&fm=webp&w=1200) [Download](https://images.transparencycdn.org/images/2016_GCB_MENA_EN.pdf)
