South Korea

Little or none Enforcement level
1 Investigations opened

South Korea demonstrates little to no enforcement against companies bribing abroad. Although the country makes up 2.9 per cent of global exports, it only opened one investigation and two cases of foreign bribery between 2016 and 2019. During that time, South Korea also closed five cases of foreign bribery with sanctions.

In December 2018, an OECD report highlighted that enforcement of foreign bribery has weakened in South Korea since 2011. Given the country’s high volume of exports and investment, this lack of enforcement is particularly problematic.
