# Transparency International condemns attempts in Brazil to give allegedly corrupt politicians amnesty URL: https://www.transparency.org/en/press/transparency-international-condemns-attempts-in-brazil-to-grant-allegedly-p Type: Press release Published: 2016-11-24 Updated: 2020-04-07 --- 24 November 2016 The Brazilian Congress is trying to pass a general amnesty for electoral crimes that will let many allegedly corrupt politicians go free. The amnesty clause is being added to an anti-corruption bill that Transparency International has supported. Transparency International condemns this move to grant corrupt politicians an amnesty and calls on Congress to pass the anti-corruption bill without the amnesty clause. “This trick to pass legislation to give politicians who are likely to be convicted of electoral crimes amnesty is a travesty. People will be outraged when they see the corrupt are not held to account. The fact that it is being done under the guise of strong anti-corruption legislation is absurd. We call on Congress to pass the anti-corruption legislation without the amnesty and condemn the subterfuge. It is no surprise that citizens do not trust their politicians,” said José Ugaz, Chair of Transparency International." **For any press enquiries please contact** Natalie Baharav Press Office E: press@transparency.org Tel: +49 30 34 38 20 666 In Brazil +55
