# Elections: anti-corruption on the agenda URL: https://www.transparency.org/en/news/elections-anti-corruption-on-the-agenda Type: News Published: 2014-05-22 Updated: 2019-11-19 --- ![](https://images.transparencycdn.org/images/India_elections_Flickr_Dave_Lonsdale_620.jpg?auto=compress&fit=crop&fm=webp&w=620&h=348.75) 22 May 2014 The spring election season is under way. Around the world billions of people are going or have already gone to the polls. So far there has been a change of government in [India](http://blog.transparency.org/2014/05/02/indias-next-government-must-take-on-corruption/) and the re-election of the African National Congress in [South Africa](http://www.transparency.org/news/feature/south_africa_a_mandate_to_tackle_corruption): both new governments will have to address serious corruption issues in their countries. From now until the end of the month [nine](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_electoral_calendar_2014#May) more countries will vote for new presidents and/or new parliaments, including in the European Union. Our chapters and offices around the world are working to put anti-corruption at the top of the electoral agenda. We want politicians to understand the key issues they must address if they want their country to be free of corruption. ### Colombia The Presidential electoral process in Colombia and the peace talks between the national government and the main guerrilla group in the country – FARC-EP – are being held simultaneously. Three days before the election, *Transparencia por Colombia* made an [urgent call](http://www.transparency.org/news/pressrelease/campana_electoral_emerge_la_crisis_etica_desaparece_el_debate_sobre_los_pro) to the candidates to focus on [clear issues](http://www.elespectador.com/opinion/politica-no-todo-vale-columna-492402) and refrain from negative campaigning. The organisation is promoting transparency in campaign financing by: - monitoring candidates’ applications for the quality and truthfulness of the information - demanding strong policies to tackle social crises in education and development - advocating judicial investigations into reported scandals about campaign financing **Vote for Integrity** Do you want to help us get anti-corruption to the top of the electoral agenda? Here are four simple steps you can take: 1. Click on this image to share on Facebook. 2. Post it on the Facebook pages of candidates in upcoming elections in your country. 3. Retweet it from our Twitter feed: [twitter.com/anticorruption](http://www.twitter.com/anticorruption). 4. Tweet it at candidates in upcoming elections in your country. Make it clear to all that you want leaders with proven integrity. ### Egypt Transparency International is calling on both candidates in the Egyptian presidential election to commit to fighting corruption by supporting a pledge (below) which has received significant [media attention](http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/3/12/100392/Business/Economy/Transparency-International-urges-Egypts-presidenti.aspx). - Within six months of assuming office establish an expert legislative committee that has broad powers to strengthen current anticorruption legislation. - Establish a politically independent and well-resourced anticorruption commission with prosecutorial powers that unifies the work of current anticorruption bodies. - Create legislation to protect whistleblowers and encourage the reporting of corruption incidents. - Create legislation for [access to information](http://action.transparency.org/egypt/), enabling civil society and citizens’ participation in monitoring and holding public officials to account. ### Europe European Union (EU) countries are about to elect 751 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) for the European Parliament. With no common EU rules governing candidate’s behaviour during the EU elections, the average citizen’s engagement in EU elections can be a challenge. Transparency International chapters across the EU are asking potential candidates to make a public commitment to integrity and transparency in EU law-making. A list of all those elected will be published [here](http://anticorruptionpledge.eu/). As of 21 May, there were 300 signatures to the European Pledge. Transparency International’s EU office is also collecting background information on the private financial interests. After the election that information will be compared with the information that newly elected MEPs provide for the public interests register. #### Latvia Transparency International Latvia has conducted a corruption risk assessment of the MEP candidates online [here](http://www.kandidatiuzdelnas.lv/en). #### Spain Transparency International Spain has asked the 10 main political parties to sign a commitment to transparency and against corruption. It has also rated the parties based on 12 anti-corruption measures. Most parties scored less than five out of 10. The full results are available [here](http://www.transparencia.org.es). ### Ukraine Following the uprising in Ukraine which ousted Victor Yanukovych and highlighted the [corruption](http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/25/viktor-yanukovych-gone-where-ukraine-missing-millions) in his administration, Transparency International Ukraine has been part of a group of civil society organisations working with the interim government to introduce anti-corruption legislation ahead of the presidential elections. The elections take place following the annexation of Crimea by Russia and continued unrest in the eastern part of the country.
