capacity building
A priority for the Africa and Middle East region is the provision of relevant skills and tools to TI National Chapters and National Contacts in the region in order to enhance and reinforce their capabilities to achieve change.
One of the key strategies being used to build capacity is to encourage collaboration between TI chapters and regional institutions on a number of activities and programs. In Africa, this includes working side-by-side with the African Union, the African Development Bank and the African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption. Many African chapters of TI are represented at the Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union which provides TI with an opportunity to play an important role in promoting the fight against corruption on the African continent. By working with African MPs through the African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption (APNAC), TI has been able to form a strategic civil society-parliamentarian anti-corruption alliance with MPs in the region. In the Middle East and North-Africa region TI chapters have developed a strong working relationship with the ARPAC (Arab Parliamentarian Against Corruption).
The goal of capacity building is further supported through the implantation of a number of regional programmes and events that, in their design, are set up to promote such exchange among chapters.
The TI Mediterranean Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres programme (TIM ALAC) supports the establishment of Advocacy and Legal Advice centres in multiple countries around the Mediterranean. As part of the project, a series of workshops will take place in Jordan with the participation from the other TI Chapters in the MENA region. The workshops aim to share experience on particular successes and challenges from other countries in the region, and demonstrate Jordanian stakeholders how effective, cohesive, multi stakeholder civil society anti corruption efforts can function and be successful even in challenging political environments.
Similarly, in the framework of a three year regional project, Promoting Transparency and Enhancing Integrity in the Arab region, the Transparency International Secretariat will work together with three national chapters in the MENA region (Lebanon, Palestine and Morocco) in order to build the capacity of Egyptian Civil Society to effectively push for anti corruption reform, as well as to lead national and regional anti-corruption campaigns.
