TI PNG congratulates PNG government on UNCAC convention

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 17 July 2007

Transparency International PNG [TIPNG] has congratulated the PNG Government for finally depositing the instrument ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Corruption [UNCAC].

Papua New Guinea is one of the 91 countries that have ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption and the instrument now provides a binding legal framework that enables parties to work together and improve good governance.

TIPNG Chairman Mike Manning said the action taken by the Government is a positive indication of its commitment to join the international efforts to fight this worldwide scourge. PNG is one of the first countries in the Asia Pacific region to ratify the convention and the depositing in New York brings the matter to a satisfying end.

“It is also an indication of its intention to clean up its act and subscribe to the principles that TIPNG has been advocating”, Mr Manning further commended the Government for achieving this very important milestone.

The UN Convention against corruption is a high priority for Transparency International as a global movement. TI’s programme on the UNCAC aims to ensure, inter alia, a strong and effective intergovernmental monitoring system for UNCAC and civil society involvement in that monitoring, as well as independent civil society monitoring of UNCAC implementation.

In so doing TIPNG will be seeking the co-operation of the Government to ensure it complies with the implementation checklist as determined by the United Nations.
