Statement on the demise of Prof Alfred Chanda – Chapter President of Transparency International Zambia

Lusaka, 07 January 2007

Today marks a sad day for Transparency International Zambia and Transparency International worldwide, our Chapter President – Professor Alfred Chanda, was this afternoon (Sunday 7th January 2007) involved in a tragic road accident in Mazabuka and has since passed away.

We are really saddened that we have lost an illustrious and extremely valuable and inspiring leader in Zambia. Prof Chanda, who was born on 5 June 1958, was a bulwark and a respected leader in the anti-corruption movement in Zambia and internationally. Prof Chanda authored five books, contributed to six books on corruption and related subjects. He made keynote presentations at major local and international anti-corruption conferences. He equally contributed immensely to the development of various anti-corruption tools and strategies for the benefit of Transparency International worldwide. His expertise as a Lawyer and Law Professor as well as his knowledge and skills in combating corruption, were an illumination and inspiration to those that worked with him and indeed the Zambian society as a whole. Prof Chanda has equally had the distinction of serving on several national and international boards. Transparency International Zambia has lost a leader and a teacher. His courage and determination to ensure that Zambia effectively combats corruption and builds integrity in 9its governance was a source of inspiration to many people. His loss is undoubtedly a big blow. We have lost a stalwart and a patriotic Zambian.

We ask the nation and all our colleagues and stakeholders, to join us in the mourning a ‘giant’ and a man of our times. We pray that we can all honour Prof Chanda by continuing with the anti-corruption fight and achieve his vision for a Zambia anchored on citizens and institutions of integrity.

May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
