A voice in the dark: the end of the Goldenberg whistleblower

Nairobi, Kenya, 17 July 2006

Like many other whistleblowers, the journey of Mr. David Sadera Munyakei reads like an expedition into the wilderness. He gave his all and exposed the Goldenberg chiefs only to start a hide and seek game of identity switches to protect himself. David Munyakei, the 2004 Transparency International Integrity Award winner succumbed to chest problems yesterday July 16, 2006 at 7 p.m at a Hospital in Narok District.

The chairman, board, members and staff of Transparency International-Kenya are saddened by the untimely death of Mr. Munyakei who until his death stood by the truth in the Goldenberg scam. The sad demise of Mr. Munyakei should be seen as a call to expedite the Whistle Blower legislation in Kenya and more so the government should make good its promise made during TI Integrity Award ceremony in 2004 and compensate the family of Mr. Munyakei.

Transparency International-Kenya, will be leaving for Narok, today at 12 pm to be with his family before burial arrangements. Mr. Munyakei is survived by a window and three lovely daughters.
