Fujimori extradition a welcome development, says Transparency International

Berlin, Germany, 21 September 2007

Transparency International welcomes the decision of Chile’s Supreme Court to accept the request of the Peruvian government to extradite former President Alberto Fujimori to face charges of corruption and human rights abuse.

By accepting five charges of corruption and two of human rights abuses, Chile sends a forceful message to the world that impunity cannot be taken for granted by those who abuse positions of power.

The extradition of Fujimori is a positive step. Now it is up to the judicial system of Peru to ensure that due process is followed and justice is done.
