Devendra Raj Panday is released in Nepal

Berlin, 28 April 2006

Transparency International (TI) Advisory Council member and former president of TI-Nepal, Dr. Devendra Raj Panday, was released from prison Tuesday after the King of Nepal declared he would restore parliament.

“We are delighted and relieved that Dr. Panday has been released from his unjust imprisonment to a society that awaits and needs leaders with such dedication to justice,” said David Nussbaum, Chief Executive of Transparency International.

Dr. Devendra Raj Panday, who was held for more than 90 days, has been a forceful advocate against corruption for more than a decade. His detention violated the fundamental right to free speech that underlies all just and democratic societies.
