The 2008 International Aid + Trade event brings together the global humanitarian relief, aid and development community to embrace the challenge of integrated aid and development. The event features a range of interactive exhibits where providers of the latest humanitarian relief goods and services will come together with leading agencies and organisations administering relief in the field, bringing the challenge of humanitarian relief to life. The conference aims at putting concepts of corruption from the social sciences in a historical perspective. Thereby it attemps to inaugurate a dialogue between current juridical, sociological, politological and economic research into corruption on the one hand and historical studies in corruption on the other. The main objective is an interdisciplinary pooling, joint reformulation and examination of definitions and models of corruption across the disciplines. These debates as well as the theoretical, analytical and empirical investigations are situated within the framework of two key models: one refers to the possible functionality of corruption mechanims, in that the latter may have been conducive to social progress and may have enhanced the integration of particular groups; the other model is based on the assumption of the inherent dysfunctionality of corruption and therefore suggests its strict criminalisation and banning from social interaction. The final discussion is supposed to illuminate, to what extent the grey zone between legality and illegality or the borderline, beyond which certain practices are labelled as corrupt in the first place, can satisfactorily be captured in a more general model.

This 2008 Berlin Conference will be the eighth event in the series of annual European Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change, and the first International Conference of the Social-Ecological Research Programme. It particularly targets at bringing together trandisciplinary research results on long-term policies from various fields. It will provide ample opportunities to advance social-ecological research into international debates and to discuss future perspectives of this field.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution.This world day for water was to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21.

This workshop is meant to be a forum open to both academics and practitioners in the field of anti-corruption/fraud in Europe and abroad, where first-hand experiences and knowledge of the role, powers and activities of anti-corruption agencies (ACAs) can be exchanged with a view to further integrated initiatives and policy research. The event is meant to assess ways of empowering ACAs based on a three-pronged strategy:
• to promote the idea that institutional empowerment can be achieved through successful statutory reforms, sound management and agenda-setting strategies, and inter-institutional coalition-building;
• to discuss different ways of strengthening ACAs’ repressive capacity by closing the sophistication gap, devising and managing successful systems of complaints, conducting regular risk assessments, and building lasting and reliable intersectoral cooperation (coalition building);
• to assist ACAs building a preventive capacity.

This specialist event will focus on Development of Trade Finance in Ukraine and CIS countries with presentations on: development of trade finance and factoring in Ukraine; support for international and intra-regional trade and co-financing with the EBRD.

Corruption is widely recognised as a major obstacle to development and legitimate democratic governance. Held for the fourth time in 2008, this intensive advanced course addresses critically the challenges of integrity reform and strategic corruption control. Drawing on interdisciplinary academic perspectives and lessons learned from practice, this course represents one of the few targeted, applied and yet conceptually grounded efforts currently available internationally for the analysis of corruption and anti-corruption. Topics covered include cross-cutting issues such as definitions, measurements and research methodology, and also distinct areas such as access to information, fiscal transparency, and risk assessment and management.

The annual programme "The Economics of Corruption - A University Training in Good Governance and Reform" offers training in anti-corruption for practitioners, researchers and students. An analysis of political, economic and organisational incentives allows participants to obtain a profound understanding of the forces that are at play. Survey techniques and statistical analysis confront theory with data. Interactive tools such as games, poster presentations and case studies involve participants and make them acquainted with today's challenges. Prof. Johann Graf Lambsdorff and his team have spearheaded models for reform that seek to effectively contain corruption while minimising the adverse effects of penalties and regulation. Participants are introduced into this body of research.
