The Power of Collaborative Innovation
Looking to the future, it becomes readily apparent that complexity, competing interests and scarce resources remain the greatest obstacles to progress on the global agenda in the absence of greater leadership and global stewardship. It is in this challenging context that the World Economic Forum will highlight "The Power of Collaborative Innovation" as the principal theme for the Annual Meeting 2008 in Davos.
The focus on collaboration and innovation underscores the opportunity to leverage the Forum’s multistakeholder model so that platforms can be built for like-minded communities to initiate necessary changes together. The Annual Meeting 2008 programme will be based on the following five conceptual pillars:
Business
Competing While Collaborating
Economics and Finance
Addressing Economic Insecurity
Geopolitics
Aligning Interests across Divides
Science and Technology
Exploring Nature’s New Frontiers
Values and Society
Understanding Future Shifts

The conference aims at putting concepts of corruption from the social sciences in a historical perspective. Thereby it attemps to inaugurate a dialogue between current juridical, sociological, politological and economic research into corruption on the one hand and historical studies in corruption on the other. The main objective is an interdisciplinary pooling, joint reformulation and examination of definitions and models of corruption across the disciplines. These debates as well as the theoretical, analytical and empirical investigations are situated within the framework of two key models: one refers to the possible functionality of corruption mechanims, in that the latter may have been conducive to social progress and may have enhanced the integration of particular groups; the other model is based on the assumption of the inherent dysfunctionality of corruption and therefore suggests its strict criminalisation and banning from social interaction. The final discussion is supposed to illuminate, to what extent the grey zone between legality and illegality or the borderline, beyond which certain practices are labelled as corrupt in the first place, can satisfactorily be captured in a more general model.

Sustaining Momentum and Responsible Growth
At their 2007 Summit, the G8 nations signalled an unprecedented interest in corporate responsibility. Not only did they encourage the business sector to use specific Corporate Responsibility instruments, such as the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the UN Global Compact, but they committed to establishing a high level dialogue with leading emerging economies on the subject. What are the emerging governmental expectations of the business sector, and how far are these fair and reasonable?
Is government trying to play 'catch-up' with a sector that is already leading across a broad front?
If so, what support for Corporate Responsibility is it most important for government to give at this point?
This high-level conference is now in its fifth successive year as a joint venture between Chatham House and FTSE Group. The two day event will examine the latest thinking on the responsibilities of business, government and civil society and assess how far corporate responsibility has become a normal part of everyday business.
Speakers from government, international organisations, finance, business, and not for profit and academic organisations.

This workshop is meant to be a forum open to both academics and practitioners in the field of anti-corruption/fraud in Europe and abroad, where first-hand experiences and knowledge of the role, powers and activities of anti-corruption agencies (ACAs) can be exchanged with a view to further integrated initiatives and policy research. The event is meant to assess ways of empowering ACAs based on a three-pronged strategy:
- to promote the idea that institutional empowerment can be achieved through successful statutory reforms, sound management and agenda-setting strategies, and inter-institutional coalition-building;
- to discuss different ways of strengthening ACAs’ repressive capacity by closing the sophistication gap, devising and managing successful systems of complaints, conducting regular risk assessments, and building lasting and reliable intersectoral cooperation (coalition building);
- to assist ACAs building a preventive capacity.

Transparency International and the United Nations Development Programme cordially invite you to the launch of Transparency International´s Global Corruption Report 2008: Corruption in the Water Sector.
More than 1 billion people live with inadequate access to safe drinking water, with dramatic consequences for lives, livelihoods and development. Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report 2008 demonstrates in its thematic section that corruption is a cause and catalyst for this water crisis, which is likely to be further exacerbated by climate change. Corruption affects all aspects of the water sector, from water resources management to drinking water services, irrigation and hydropower. In this timely report, scholars and professionals document the impact of corruption in the sector, with case studies from all around the world offering practical suggestions for reform.

The intensive advanced course held by the CEU summer university addresses critically the challenges of integrity reform and strategic corruption control. Drawing on interdisciplinary academic perspectives and lessons learned from practice, this course represents one of the few targeted, applied and yet conceptually grounded efforts currently available internationally for the analysis of corruption and anti-corruption. Topics covered include cross-cutting issues such as definitions, measurements and research methodology, and also distinct areas such as access to information, fiscal transparency, and risk assessment and management.
This SUN course will include intensive Policy Labs devoted to the in-depth analysis of some of these issues that will allow for further specialization and expert discussion in a small group format.

Daunting challenges confront the 21st century, from economic under-development, bad governance and global warming to terrorism and cultural conflicts. Underlying these challenges is a deep human insecurity which is felt not only in the developing world. How do we understand this insecurity and how can we give content to the great aim of human security? How to articulate its foundations? How to give it practical expression? These are among the questions that motivate this first Caux Forum for Human Security. To find a preventive strategy that could tackle the root causes of insecurity and help manage conflicts and save millions of lives will require unprecedented trust and collaboration among all nations and actors. We need a truly global synergy that gives every person an opportunity to contribute to peace and human security. The conference will explore what it will take to create such synergy.

A day rarely goes by without a corporate corruption story hitting the headlines and the need for a well-defined ethics and compliance programme has never been clearer. The UK government is now under increasing pressure to prosecute corruption cases, a new Bribery Bill is to be announced this Autumn and the Serious Fraud Office’s decision not to pursue the BAE Systems case is under continued scrutiny.
Attend Legal IQ’s Best Practices for Preventing Corruption & Bribery and you will leave knowing how to protect the reputation and share value of your company and safeguard your colleagues:
- Interpret the implications of the UK’s upcoming Corruption Bill. The SEC and Transparency International explain how other jurisdictions are implementing the OECD’s standards on corruption and how the FCPA is being applied to European business practices
- Satisfy all your stakeholders by incorporating your anti-corruption programme with your corporate governance objectives
- Develop effective training programmes for colleagues, clients and suppliers to ensure all stakeholders understand and adhere to your ethical standards, as rolled out at Northrop Grumman and De Beers
- Successfully handle an intrusive investigation situation with best practice from BAE Systems
- Operating under a Deferred Prosecution Agreement: How Monsanto Company adapted their practices following prosecution by the Department of Justice

The annual programme "The Economics of Corruption - A University Training in Good Governance and Reform" offers training in anti-corruption for practitioners, researchers and students. An analysis of political, economic and organisational incentives allows participants to obtain a profound understanding of the forces that are at play. Survey techniques and statistical analysis confront theory with data. Interactive tools such as games, poster presentations and case studies involve participants and make them acquainted with today's challenges. Prof. Johann Graf Lambsdorff and his team have spearheaded models for reform that seek to effectively contain corruption while minimising the adverse effects of penalties and regulation. Participants are introduced into this body of research.
This international course is the kick-off event for a Master's Program at the University of Passau. Students who enroll in the Master in International Economics and Business can pick a focus in "Governance, Institutions and Anti-corruption".

Fighting against corruption and promoting gender equality are vital forces when it comes to effectivity of development cooperation.
The aim of the workshop is to overcome the debate on whether women are more affected by corruption then men, or whether women might be less corrupt then men. Rather, the workshop intends to open avenues for effectively integrating gender-related aspects into anti-corruption efforts and vice-versa. Results are expected to be fed back into the practice of development cooperation and into relevant international processes such as the UNCAC working groups.

The Programme offers an outstanding opportunity for leaders from business, NGO’s, and government to develop an advanced understanding of how, through its mainstream activities business can contribute to improving the quality of life of the world’s poorest communities. The seminar will examine the context of global poverty and why it is increasingly perceived as a business issue. A central theme of the Programme is to consider ways in which corporations can work effectively with donor organizations, host governments and civil society organisations towards eradicating poverty.
