Slagiana Taseva, president of Transparency Zero Corruption, the Transparency International (TI) chapter in FYR of Macedonia has been named as a Person of the Year in FYR of Macedonia for 2010. The television station A1 chose the head of the TI chapter as one of its 14 people who made an impact on the fight for freedom and democracy in 2010.

A law professor at St. Climent Ohridski in Bitola, Taseva founded the country’s first TI chapter in 2001 and is again chairing the current TI partner organisation since 2007. She has also worked on anti-corruption issues for UNDP and with the Council of Europe on money laundering. She has previously served as first president of the state anticorruption commission, the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

“Slagjana’s work against corruption in Macedonia has been impressive and we congratulate her on this well-earned recognition. Under her leadership, Transparency Zero Corruption grows more influential all the time,” said Miklos Marschall, Transparency International Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia.

Transparency Zero Corruption works to raise citizen awareness of anti-corruption and to advocate strong anti-corruption legislation. The current priorities are to enhance governance in local self-governments and political parties and promote anti-corruption and corporate governance standards in the private sector.
