Commitments to transparency and the fight against corruption undertaken at the Summits
At the close of each Summit, the States pledge their commitment to different issues. The countries have undertaken the following in the area of transparency at the three Summits held to date:
Transparency
- To promote cooperation between national institutions in the hemisphere that are responsible for standards and practices relating to preparing, submitting, verifying and auditing public account reports, and to support the exchange of information on attendant oversight activities.
- To foster cooperation and the sharing of experiences and best legislative practices.
- To work together to facilitate cooperation between the national institutions responsible for ensuring that human rights and the right to unrestricted access to information are protected, promoted and upheld.
- To create and implement programmes geared towards facilitating civic involvement and transparency.
Fight against corruption
- To sign and ratify the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (IACAC) and to promote the proper implementation of the convention.
- To support the creation of a Follow-up Mechanism to the IACAC.
- To support the strengthening of the Inter-American Network against Corruption within the framework of the OAS, as well as the initiatives aimed at bolstering cooperation between public officials in charge of ethics and civil society representatives.
- To strengthen the participation of civil society in the fight against corruption through initiatives that bolster civic organisation, training and unity with a view to working on specific projects that promote transparency and accountability.
- To continue to promote policies, processes and mechanisms that will ensure the protection of public interest and the use of net worth statements provided by public officials.
