New publication:
Anti-Corruption Conventions in the Americas: What Civil Society Can Do to Make Them Work.
This easy-to-read publication provides a concise overview of the relevant anti-corruption conventions for the Americas with a view to making conventions more accessible to a wide range of civil society organisations. Special emphasis is given to the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption and the United Nation’s Convention against Corruption.
TI Regional Programme in the Americas to Promote OAS Convention and UNCAC
The Regional Programme, funded by OSI, aims to create a dynamic impetus for implementation and enforcement of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption in the Americas by stimulating, strengthening and expanding broad civil society campaigns at national and regional levels and the UN Convention against Corruption. While the Programme primarily concentrates on the Inter-American Convention as the principal and most advanced framework for anti-corruption reform in the Americas, it also draws on important elements in the UN Convention against Corruption, which powerfully reinforces and complements the OAS Convention.
The Programme is developing advocacy tools for civil society organisations and other stakeholders, to stimulate and strengthen civil society campaigning on the Conventions at country level and to strengthen regional networks and collaboration on convention implementation and enforcement. In 2005, the Programme focused on four areas of activity promoting implementation of the Conventions:
- Responses to OAS Convention Questionnaires, contributing to the review process of the Follow-up Mechanism, in order to promote implementation of the OAS Convention and to provide a civil society perspective
- OAS and UN Convention Report Cards to monitor regional progress in implementation of the Conventions in four priority areas
- Americas Advocacy Guide for the OAS and UN Conventions
- New website about anti-corruption conventions in the Americas
TI National Chapter Activities to Promote the Anti-corruption Conventions in the Americas
TI National Chapters are making a great contribution to the promotion of anti-corruption conventions in the Americas. Their activities include workshops and public discussions, awareness-raising activities (articles in the press, radio programmes, and booklets distributed to organisations, newsletters...), as well as lobbying activities to promote the signature, ratification and implementation of the conventions.
