The Berlin Civil Society Center helps global civil society organisations (CSOs) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their work. By bringing together the most important actors, facilitating communication and enabling cooperation, the Center aims to achieve concrete results to be implemented in the work of the CSOs. The Center works closely together with its supporting CSOs, which play a key role in defining and forming the Center’s activities.
Existing for less than three years, the Center is a start-up still shaping its organisational structures and working against tight deadlines in order to fulfil its high ambitions with a small team. In November 2009, the Center organised the Global Perspectives conference which gathered 100 top leaders of the largest CSOs. In 2010, the Center will organise a number of meetings for directors responsible for technology and communication, human resources and one meeting gathering the chairs and CEOs of the top CSOs worldwide.
The Center is now offering two internships starting on 4 January 2010. As an intern at the Center you will work in a small and highly motivated team. In our work, we strive for the highest of standards every day.
Internship A: Coordination and Organisation Assistance
As an intern within Coordination and Organisation, you will support and be responsible to the Personal Assistant of the Executive Director. During this internship, you will therefore be part of the Center’s key operations and have the best possibility to get an insight into all areas of the Center’s work. In our small team, you will have the chance to broaden your practical skills in several working areas. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the shaping of the Center’s organisational structures.
Responsibilities:
- Support the daily work of the Executive Director
- Support office administration, incl. book-keeping
- Process in- and outgoing correspondence, translations and proof-reading of documents (presentations, manuals, etc.) in German and English
- Prepare meetings and business/networking trips
- Supervise the Center’s website and develop newsletter
- Supervise databases and data entry
- Internet research
- Fundraising
Requirements:
- Interest in the non-profit sector and the management of CSOs
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Diligent, reliable and focused way of operating
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
- Fluent English and German
- MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Completed BA degree (or correspondingly)

Internship B: Programme Management Assistance
As an intern within the Programme team you will work alongside our Project Manager and be responsible to the Project Director. You will work with all organisational parts and phases of the up-coming meetings. Since these meetings make up our core activity, this experience is a unique opportunity to directly connect to leading NGOs and to professionalise your project management skills.
Responsibilities:
Support in the planning, organising and running of workshops within the following areas:
- Event logistics (producing invitation letters, workshop programmes, participation lists, organising catering, cultural programmes etc.)
- Event documentation (producing reading lists, evaluation forms etc.)
- Internet research
- Customer service (providing a friendly, reliable and efficient service to all event participants)
- Database maintenance (updating invitee lists etc.)
- In- and outgoing correspondence, translations and proof-reading of documents (concept papers, invitations etc.) in German and English
Requirements:
- Interest in the non-profit sector and the management of CSOs
- Interest in project and event management
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Diligent, reliable and focused way of operating
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure

Weekly hours: 40 hours
Compensation: 200 € per month

Internship in the Policy and Research Department
The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated intern for the POLICY AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT
Description of Internship:
Main function: Assist the research, analysis, organisational and administrative work of the team on a variety of corruption related themes.
Dates: 8 February 2010 – 7 May 2010
Duration: Three months; full time Monday to Friday. Possibility of extension for another three months.
Remuneration: EUR 400 net per month for non-sponsored candidates.
Location: Berlin, Germany
Key responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide key support to the Policy and Research Department based in TI’s global secretariat in Berlin, Germany. The department leads the organisation’s advocacy work on anti-corruption, coordinating a range of complementary policy and research products and activities. Specific initiatives include the production of corruption measurement tools, such as the Corruption Perceptions Index, the Bribe Payers Index, the Global Corruption Barometer and National Integrity System Country Studies. The department’s intern will be asked to perform key tasks, including:
- Contributing to research and advocacy activities required for the production and publishing of TI’s working and policy position paper series (including climate change, whistle blowing and forestry governance).
- Conducting and contributing to quantitative and qualitative analysis on anti-corruption indices, indicators and monitoring systems, including the production of graphs and databases that draw on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Global Corruption Barometer and Bribe Payer’s Index (BPI).
- Assisting the U4 Helpdesk (www.transparency.org/policy_research/u4_helpdesk) with research as needed to respond to demand-driven queries.
- Supporting department administrative work on related policy and research events, workshops and activities.
- Contributing to the research of the TI’s new anti-corruption research network.
Requirements:
- Advanced university degree in public policy, international law, international studies, development economics or a related social science field.
- Some background in current anti-corruption discourse, policies and players.
- Previous experience working on higher level research and/or advocacy activities with a think tank or non governmental organization.
- Strong research and writing skills; editing experience preferred
- Familiarity with carrying out quantitative research and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, independently and balancing multiple tasks.
- Excellent spoken and written English. Arabic, French and/or Spanish language an asset

TI does not investigate or expose individual cases of corruption but advocates for reform by focusing on systemic improvement and by building coalitions with other anti-corruption stakeholders, including governments, the private sector and civil society organisations.
Main function: Assisting the Deputy Regional Director in coordinating the Asia Pacific Department
Starting Date: 15th February 2009
Duration: six months, full time, Monday-Friday

- Research based work to support the expansion of TI in the Asia Pacific region;
- Gathering data & statistics to contribute to country level analysis of corruption;

- Preparing meeting reports as well as background research for project proposals;
- Mainstreaming effective office processes;
Knowledge, experience and skills required:
- Strong academic background in international relations and political science (other relevant fields will be considered);
- Strong research and organisational skills;
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office;
- Excellent English (spoken and written) is a key requirement; knowledge of Asian language(s) an advantage;
- Demonstrated interest and knowledge of the Asia Pacific region is a requirement;
- Experience in office work;

is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active intern to support its work to support its work in the Africa & Middle East Department, working primarily with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) team.

Key responsibilities:
- Assisting with the implementation of a number of projects, including regional programmes on promoting transparency of National Integrity System studies (NIS); Advocacy & Legal Advice Centres (ALACs); the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and other ongoing projects
- Assist in the preparation of workshops, conferences and trainings
- Liaising with contact groups and National Chapters on various issues
- Assisting with the preparation of TI presentations to external interlocutors
- Monitoring international media for issues of interest to TI
- Other various administrative tasks and support to the Africa/Middle East Department
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) is a requirement; a working knowledge of French is highly desired; knowledge of Arabic (standard and/or colloquial) would be a strong asset
- Good knowledge of MS Office applications
- Some knowledge of, and considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption (required)

Description of Internship
Main function: Assisting the Sub-Saharan Africa team in their work
Starting Date: 11 January 2010
Duration: Six months (full time)
Remuneration: EUR 400 per month, if the internship is not sponsored by a third party
Location: Berlin, Germany
Key responsibilities:
- Assisting with the implementation of a number of projects, including a regional programme focused on promoting transparency and integrity in basic service delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa (TISDA);
- Assisting with preparations for participation of delegates from National Chapters to attend a series of programme-related workshops in Africa (flight and hotel bookings, and other logistical issues);
- Liaising with contact groups and National Chapters on these and other issues;
- Assisting with the production of TI publications, by providing translation and/or proof reading of documents;
- Monitoring international media for issues of interest to TI;
- Other various administrative tasks and support to the Africa/Middle East department.
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- Strong academic background in political science / international relations (other relevant fields will be considered)
- Adaptable and flexible personality, able to handle multiple tasks and workloads, ability to prioritise own work;
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities, good team player;
